Workshops

We’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, but we know that’s not really possible, so instead, we have fabulously amazing workshops.

The target audience for our workshops are young women and girls between the ages of 8 and 25 (grouped accordingly) in both academic and community settings. We’ve created and facilitated both standalone two-hour presentations and multi-week, multi-session workshops.

We’re all about empowering young women and girls to become the best they can be and to revel in their own brand of genius. We’re also about critical thinking skills and action. As the saying goes: if not now, when? If not me, who? We live in a world where:

  • Black girls are 34% more exposed to alcohol ads in magazines than girls from other backgrounds — CAMY
  • African American girls are three times more likely to be raised by a female single parent or grandparent than their white counterparts — CENSUS
  • 64% of women with HIV/AIDS are black — CDC
  • Black girls are 50% less likely to be considered gifted than their counterparts — US ED DEPT
  • 18.8% of black women will be a victim of rape/attempted rape — RAINN
  • Black women are twice as likely to be unemployed as white women — URBAN LEAGUE

Black women and girls are under siege within their own communities and society at-large. Not only are they more likely to contract HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), they are at high risk for physical and sexual assault, and death from curable/manageable ailments such as diabetes, obesity and hypertension.

Every day, popular media bombards black females with the same old one-dimensional stereotypes failing to to be invested in presenting more complex personas. Their most visible form of cultural expression, music, tells them that it is ok to be objectified, and subjected to sexist idealogy and behavior. And that’s where we come in…
